Obituary for Richard 'Dick' Jensen

The funeral service for Richard ‘Dick’ Jensen, 84, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:00am, Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Dick died Monday, January 21, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD.

Visitation will be 3:00-7:00pm, Friday, with family present from 5:00-7:00pm, followed by a prayer service at 7:00pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street.

Richard Dale Jensen was born February 23, 1934 to Dallas and Verle (Fuhrman) Jensen at Aberdeen, SD. He attended school in Aberdeen, SD, Jamestown and Bismarck, ND, and Spokane and Snohomish, WA, as his family moved. He finished his schooling from 6th to 12th grade in Aberdeen, graduating from Central High School in 1952. Dick went into the construction business with his father. He served in the US Army starting in December of 1956. On December 29, 1957, Dick was united in marriage to Darlys F. Hale in Aberdeen. They moved to Grovetown, GA, where he was stationed. They returned to Aberdeen in December of 1958 when he was honorably discharged from the Army. Dick continued to work for his father in the construction business until his father retired in 1968. At this time, Dick started his own construction business which continued until 1988, when he began working as a carpenter for the Presentation Sisters at Presentation College and Convent.

Dick was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he taught the second grade Sunday school class and was a member of Aide Association for Lutherans. He was active in Promise Keepers, Heartland Men of Integrity, and men’s Bible studies. He was also a Cub Scout Leader. Dick used his carpentry skills in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Dick was a founding member of the Aberdeen Rural Fire Department and held many offices including Fire Chief for several years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, camping and watching John Wayne movies.

Grateful for having shared Dick’s life are his wife of 61 years: Darlys, Aberdeen; three children: Dean (Darcy) Jensen, Lakewood, CO, Dale (Deb) Jensen, Aberdeen, and DeAnn Arnott (Russ Root), Huron, SD; his son-in-law: Wayne Gallipo, Sioux Falls, SD; his grandchildren: Travis (Lisa) Gallipo, Eric Gallipo (Kristy Gislason), Haley Jensen, Grant Jensen, Brandi Jensen, Sadie Jensen, Landon Jensen, Becca Arnott, Ashley Arnott, and Cammie Arnott; and his great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Stella, Cody, Riley, Wesley, Harrison, Destiny, Mason, Addilyn and Alyse.

Preceding Dick in death are his parents, Dallas and Verle, daughter, Debbie Gallipo, and his siblings: Jerry Jensen and Joy Janes.
