Obituary for Marian L. Fischbach

The Mass of Christian Burial for Marian Fischbach, 96, of Warner, SD, is 10:00am, Friday, March 8, 2019, at All Saints Catholic Parish in Mellette, SD, with Father Tom Anderson, Celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mellette at a later date. Marian died Thursday, February 28 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00pm, Thursday with a Wake and Rosary service at 6:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Marian was born February 2, 1923 in La Crosse, WI to Erick and Marie (Dolle) Wagner. She was baptized at St. Joseph Church and attended Catholic school graduating from Aquinas High School. Following graduation she attended vocational school and worked at several jobs in the La Crosse area.

Bowling proved to be not only a pastime for Marian, but a way to meet her future husband. One of her teammates introduced Marian to James W. Fischbach from Warner, SD. Their long-distance courtship resulted in Marian marrying the love of her life on May 1, 1948 at St. James Catholic Church in La Crosse WI. The couple made their home and raised their family on the family farm near Warner. Things changed for the girl who was an only child, now she had large family gatherings which she dearly loved. Marian, Jim, and family made yearly trips to Wisconsin to visit Marian's family. Her daughters continued the tradition for several years by taking Marian to Wisconsin to visit her cousins.

Marian’s faith and family were of great importance to her. She was an active member of All Saints Parish in Mellette, member of the Altar Society, lectored at Mass for years, and attended daily Mass whenever possible. She was right at home at Mother Joe’s Chapel when she moved to Nano Nagle, and later became a resident at Mother Joseph Manor. Even as Marian’s memory faded, she would have a rosary in hand, praying.

Family gatherings always seemed to end with card games where the kids could play with Grandma. She was a stickler for playing by the rules so the kids learned to pay attention when they played so they didn’t make mistakes. Marian had a deep love for her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, James W., daughter, Lori Jean, and grandson, James Robert Culver.

Marian is survived by her children: Joan (Jerry) Culver of Iroquois, SD, Barb (Keith) Breidenbach, Warner, SD, James E. (Helen Jeanne) Fischbach from Warner, SD and Francie (Steve) Miller of Sioux Falls, SD. She is also survived by her Grandchildren: Jeff (Brooke) Culver, Jay Culver all from Huron, SD John (KaeLynn) Culver from Alpena, SD, Kevin (Rachel) Breidenbach, Sioux Falls, SD, Mark Breidenbach from Warner, SD, Carolyn (Jason) Haus from Holly, MI, Jennifer (Randy) Rasmussen from Sioux Falls, SD, Andy
Fischbach from Warner, SD, Stesha (Nick) Oltmanns from Lennox, SD, and Seth (Brittany) Miller from Sioux Falls, SD and 21 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Calvary Cemetery, Mellette, the Salvation Army, or the Warner School Library.
