Obituary for Layle M. Evans

The celebration of life for Layle Evans will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 5, at the Plymouth Congregational UCC, 431 W Melgaard Rd., Aberdeen, with Pastors Jeff Schirle and Jon Damaska officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at the Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home. Layle died Sunday, March 31, 2019, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen at age 92.

Layle Merritt Evans was born on the family homestead May 8, 1926, to Benjamin and Esther (Markham) Evans. He attended Beotia country school through the eighth grade and then spent his high school years in Brentford, graduating in 1943. He enrolled that fall at South Dakota State College in Brookings, served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1945-46, and then returned to SDSC to complete his bachelor’s degree in animal science.

On December 26, 1946, he married Marlyce Faye Mathieu in Brentford, and in 1950 Layle taught veteran ag classes in Conde as he began farming with his oldest brother, Cyril. Layle and Marlyce raised six kids and also cared for several foster children.

Layle was a 4-H leader in Spink and Brown Counties, served as a teacher for the Brentford UCC youth group, was involved with the Placerville Church Camp, and was an active member of the Plains Lions Club and Conde Legion for many years. He also served on the South Dakota Wheat Growers board of directors, and in 1961 was named the Aberdeen Area’s Outstanding Young Farmer.

On September 9, 2009, Layle married Dolores (Venner) Morgan and quickly inherited a large, wonderful family, cheerfully willing to assist with the “young” couple’s needs. Layle and Dolores were always on the go, maintaining a schedule that would have exhausted many half their age.

Layle is survived by his wife Dolores, children Greg (Jeannie) Morgan, Kevin (Stacie) Morgan, Lonie (Michael) Rausch, Denise (LeRoy) McComsey, Camille (Ray) Schmidt, David Morgan, Bradley (Robyn) Morgan, Jerome (Lisa) Morgan, Chad (Linda Fritza) Morgan, Byron Dahl, Larry (Karen) Evans, Rod (Vicki) Evans, Fran Hoeft, Dianne (Jeff) Lee, daughter-in-law Peggy (Gorter) Evans, daughter-in-law Lynn (Holmberg) Dahl, daughter-in-law Julie (Kolb) Thomas, sister-in-law Janis Mathieu Grosz, 41 grandchildren, approximately 60 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marlyce, son John, daughter-in-law Scarlet (Switzenberg) Evans, daughter-in-law Maria (Wattier) Evans, son-in-law Bob Hoeft, granddaughter Erin Marie Steger, siblings and spouses Lorena & Earl Lutz, Cyril & Ruth Evans, Francis Evans, Aubra “Milton” & Elsie Evans, and Winfred Evans.

Pallbearers will be Brian Evans, Shawn Evans, Barrett Evans, Michael Hoeft, Travis Hoeft, Cody Evans, Brandon Steger, Brian Lee, and Richard Dahl.

Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Morgan, Kevin Morgan, David Morgan, Bradley Morgan, Jerome Morgan, Chad Morgan, and Lannie Mielke.
