Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Cresbard American Legion Post 213. John died Saturday, August 24 at his home after a twelve year battle with multiple myeloma.

John Swanhorst was born on August 17, 1934 on a farm two miles north of Cresbard, SD to Fred and Erika (Russman) Swanhorst. He attended school in Cresbard and graduated from Cresbard High School with the class of 1953. He entered the US Army on November 4, 1954 where he did his basic training at Fort Bliss and then spent nineteen months in Germany. He served as Radio Operator and Communication Linesman. John was honorably discharged on August 4, 1956. In 1957 he moved back to Cresbard where he farmed with his dad. On June 28, 1958 he married Donna Boekelheide, a rival cheerleader from Northville, and she became the love of his life. They made their home on the farm until they retired forty-two years later and moved to Aberdeen.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen and formerly Concordia Lutheran Church, Cresbard, where he served on several boards. John and Donna enjoyed taking bus trips and cruises throughout the US and Europe together. He also volunteered in several places in Aberdeen, and served on the Fairview Township Board, Cresbard School Board, Faulk County FHA Board and as Faulk County Commissioner. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and watching the Green Bay Packers, of which he was a proud shareholder.

His greatest love was spending time with his wife, children and especially his grandchildren. Farming and morning coffee at McDonald’s were close behind. The family is grateful to the Avera Hospice caretakers for their excellent care.

Grateful for having shared John’s life are his wife, Donna Swanhorst, Aberdeen, children, Curt (Cindy) Swanhorst, McCook, NE, Wendy Swanhorst and Jann (Mark) Engelstad both of Denver, CO, grandchildren, John Swanhorst, Hanah (Nick) Nothnagel, Gavin and Erika Engelstad, great-grandson, Ezra Nothnagel, siblings, David (Hedi) Swanhorst, Robert (Trish) Swanhorst, sisters-in-law, Joetta and Karen Swanhorst and brother-in-law, Dean (Dolores) Boekelheide.
