Obituary for Genevieve Madge Johnson

The Celebration of Life Services for Genevieve Madge Johnson, 95, of Aberdeen, SD will be at 2:00 P.M., Monday, November 26, 2018 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Officiant will be Pastor Derek Baum of the First United Methodist Church. Genevieve passed away Monday, November 19, at Angelhaus Nursing Home. Burial will be in the Riverside Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Genevieve was born June 6, 1923, in Aberdeen, SD, to Fred and Doris (Darby) Gerth. She attended Aberdeen schools, and upon her graduation from Central High School took a job for a short time as a legal secretary.

She was united in marriage with Elroy Johnson in Aberdeen, on October 21, 1942, and they were blessed with three sons: Charles, Dennis, and Gordon. They lived on a farm southwest of Groton for a few years, and later they moved to another farm south of Aberdeen. Genevieve continued to live there until declining health resulted in her moving first to Gellhaus Carehaus Assisted Living, and then to Angelhaus Nursing Home.
After her marriage to Elroy, her mother-in-law invited “Gen” to join the Sunshine Club. They exchanged homemaking tips and recipes, and she very much enjoyed the monthly gathering for many years, even though she was by far the youngest member. She was active in the Methodist Church and Altar Guild, and she and Elroy were very involved in the Republican Party, especially during Elroy’s term as Brown County Sheriff for twelve years. She was proud to have been a member of the group of women who prepared and served the famous pheasant sandwiches to the troops when they came through Aberdeen. She will be most remembered for her deep faith and prayer life, and her love for her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Elroy, her son, Dennis, her parents, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Paul and Josephine Johnson, her brothers Aldis Gerth, Norman Gerth, and Fred Gerth, and sisters Jearl Ferguson and Nadine Smith.

Survivors include her children: Charles (Jane) Johnson of Lake City SD, Gordon (Karen) Johnson of Custer, SD and Casa Grande, AZ, and daughter-in-law Dixie Johnson, Goodwin, SD; nine grandchildren: Tami Johnson, Jeremy (Linda) Johnson, Andrew (Ally) Johnson, Sean (Jill) Grefe, Donnie Drager, Nadine Richter, Scott (Crystal) Johnson, and Sarah (Jayson) Swanson; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, 502 S. Lincoln St., Aberdeen, SD 57401.

Condolences may be addressed to the family in care of Charles Johnson, PO Box 94, Lake City, SD 57247, or Gordon Johnson, 3841 N. Kootenia Ct., Casa Grande AZ.
