Obituary for Ella Mae Vining

The funeral service for Ella Mae Vining, 97, of Watertown, SD, and formerly of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, Aberdeen, with Pastor Derek Baum officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen. Ella Mae died Friday, October 11, at Prairie Lakes Healthcare in Watertown.

Visitation will be from 12:00pm until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Ella Mae Belseth was born May 12, 1922, to Casper and Olive (Ricker) Belseth in Edmunds County, SD. She grew up on the family farm near Wetonka, SD and attended Penbrooke Grade School in Wetonka. Ella Mae graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen in 1941. After high school, Ella Mae worked for the phone company during WWII.

On January 13, 1946, Ella Mae was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, John Vining at the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. They made Aberdeen their home and were lifelong members of the church. John passed away on February 1, 1993. Ella Mae continued to live in Aberdeen until moving to Watertown several years ago to be closer to her daughter, Ginny.

Ella Mae enjoyed weekends spent at the family cabin on Richmond Lake fishing. When her son Rich was younger, she would take him and his friends road hunting near Leola, SD. Ella Mae and John spent many Saturday nights dancing at the Elks Lodge over the years. They also spent winters together in Rio Grande Valley, TX. She was a talented seamstress and made many of her family’s clothes over the years. She also made beautiful quilts and cross stitching. One of her favorite pass times was golfing. Ella Mae had a kind and gentle spirit. She was especially proud of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild.

Grateful for having shared Ella Mae’s life are her children: Rich Vining, Sioux Falls, SD, and Ginny Schlekeway, Watertown, SD; her grandchildren: John (Sarah) Vining, Tom Vining (fiancé Taylor Brown), Dan Vining, Gregg (Stacia) Engler, Sarah (Tom) deWit, Kelly (fiancé Chris Murray) Vining, Shelly (Jerry) Lovell, Patty (Pat) McClemans, Jeff (Leanne) Schlekeway, Jennifer Heggelund, and Mark (Julia) Schlekeway; her great-grandchildren: Jones Vining, Maria Mae Vining, Megan McDonald, Lincoln deWit, Navy Murray, Samantha (Drew) Gentry, Trevor Lovell, Ashtin (Carter) Evans, Conner McClemans, Colton McClemans, Mackenzie McClemans, Jackson McClemans, Sierrah Schlekeway, Peyton Schlekeway, MaKenna Schlekeway, Lexi Schlekeway, Marcus Heggelund, Meghan Heggelund, Mason Heggelund, Griffen Schlekeway, Leighton Schlekeway, Talan Schlekeway; and one great-great-grandson: Cason Evans.

Preceding Ella Mae in death are her parents: Casper and Olive Belseth; husband: John Vining; an infant son: Jeffery Vining; her best friend and sister: Evelyn O’Brien; and her son-in-law: Jerry Schlekeway.
