Beryl B Benscoter was born April 1, 1920, in Aberdeen, SD, to Lee and Orra Benscoter. Reflecting her fun loving spirit, being born on April Fool’s Day provided additional joy and humor to her birthday celebrations for her family and friends.

Spending nearly her entire life as a resident of Aberdeen, Beryl graduated from Aberdeen Central High School, where she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Carroll. They were married October 6, 1941, and celebrated 62 years together. As members of the “Greatest Generation” their early lives were impacted by two world wars and the Great Depression. That did not keep them from starting their family with the birth of their first son, Rob, in 1943. Nor did it prevent Beryl from traveling with her young son from Aberdeen to the Panama Canal Zone, where Bob was assigned to the US Army Headquarters Mobile Force and Security Command office. Her adventurous and fun loving spirit would continue to impact and inspire her family for decades to come. Upon their return to the US, the family returned home to Aberdeen. In 1950, they added to their family with the birth of their second son, Rich.

Beryl worked for Stoudt Drug Co. on Main Street for many years, where she helped operate the retail section and the lunch counter, which was a popular gathering spot for many of Aberdeen’s business leaders. She was later employed by First National Bank, where she helped customers in the safety deposit department.

During the years of raising their family, Beryl came to be called “Mom” by more than her two sons. Beginning with many of their children’s friends, to college students “adopted” by families in their church, and including numerous others who crossed paths through work or other social connections, Bob and Beryl became “parent” figures to a host of individuals who became their “children”. In addition, when their sons married, they accepted their daughters-in-law as if they were their own daughters. Their home was often a gathering place for family and friends. The most memorable are the annual “Tom and Jerry” parties they hosted on Christmas and New Year’s Day, entertaining dozens of family and friends.

Beryl was always known as fun loving and ready for the next adventure, like pheasant hunting or riding on her son’s motorcycle. She and Bob enjoyed traveling throughout the United States to visit family and friends. She was also known to be a jokester who enjoyed making people laugh, as shown when she sneaked into her own 80th birthday party dressed as a “bag lady” complete with blacked out front teeth.

She was also very creative; knitting and crocheting dozens of doilies and wall hangings greatly valued by family and friends. Perhaps the most memorable are the 38 Christmas stockings she created for her growing family; a task she eventually passed on to her granddaughter Alyson.

Family and friends will greatly miss her engaging smile and loving hugs as she begins the greatest adventure of all. She has left us all with many wonderful memories and love.

Beryl was preceded in death by her husband Robert, parents Lee and Orra Benscoter, sister Delph Kemnits, and grandson Andrew.

She will continue to be celebrated by her family: Son, Rob, and Son, Rich (Launda), 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
